The city itself, as of July 2006, only had a population of 486,411, but the metropolitan area had a population of 5,138,223.
Long a city of regional commerce, it has become a city of international influence. The metropolitan area has, between 2000 and 2006, grown by over 20%, thus becoming the fastest growing metropolitan area in the U.S.
