The only time simultaneous interpreting equipment is not required is when addressing a very small group of people. In this case whispering interpretation is possible. The simultaneous interpreting is being carried out by a portable system whereby the interpreter attaches a small microphone on his shirt and renders the translation into the microphone.

The interpretation equipment is an essential part of simultaneous conference interpretation.   It usually consists of a soundproof booth housing the simultaneous interpreters equipped with a central console, infrared transmitters,

head sets for the audience and a qualified technician present at all time. The system can be what we call on “simple mode” involving just two languages or on a more complex “relay mode” involving many languages, more and interpreters more than one booth.

A good example of relay mode would be when we provided interpretation services for World Youth Day 2002, Pope John Paul II was speaking English, however the translation was been rendered into 7 different languages: Italian, French, Spanish, German, Arabic, Polish and Portuguese. 

Alternatively, in smaller settings, interpreters may use a portable system instead of a booth. In this instance, the interpreter talks into a small microphone clipped onto his/her shirt. While cheaper and very mobile, this system however does not isolate the interpreter and often times outside noise can distract the interpreter making the task more difficult.
