Third-largest city in the state of Texas and the ninth-largest in the United States, Dallas was founded in 1841.
Dallas started as predominantly white, but growth in the 20th century diversified its population. Today, non-Hispanic whites represent only one-third of the population. While Hispanics (mostly Hispanic immigrants) are the largest minority group, Dallas is today extraordinarily cosmopolitan, with large numbers of Koreans, Taiwanese, Chinese, Vietnamese, East Indians, Bangladeshi, Pakistani, Arabs, Canadians, West Indians, Germans, Poles, Romanians and Russians.
Dallas owes a lot of its importance mostly to history and geography, as it grew as a center for the oil and cotton industries and at the crossroad of many rail lines. The city subsequently built a solid industrial and financial sector to support the dynamism of the state’s economy.
